Our Story

How it all started...

In November of 1913, a group of 16 individuals started a new church work to reach the western part of the city. They purchased land at the corner of Salem Ave and Bartlette St, and named the new church Salem Avenue Baptist.
In 1977, the church purchased a 15 acre tract of land on West Oakland Ave and started construction on its current facilities and changed its name to New Salem Baptist Church a year later. During the church's 100+ year history, it has helped start three churches in the Sumter community.

Where we are...

Currently we are a church that is redefining ourselves to reach the next generation here in Sumter. We want to see families come together and lives transformed. We understand there are so many pressures pulling us in all directions, and we want to provide a "safe place" where everyone can come together and learn God's plan for their lives and serve the Sumter community.

Where we are headed...

We are redefining the way we connect with God at New Salem. We offer a unique worship experience that we call our Cafe Service." This is a great entry point for those that want to connect with a church but don't want the intimidation of large crowds. We offer a coffee bar style atmosphere with a casual biblical teaching by our Pastor.
We also offer groups that you can connect with to learn more about God's plan for your life and help you grow and mature as a person.
